I can admit this relationship brought out the worst in me at times, but only because I was constantly pushed to my breaking point. He began with intense love bombing, telling me he wanted to marry me, have kids, and spend forever together. He attached (aka forced) himself in every aspect and decision of my life, made me feel like I’d found my person, and then slowly flipped the script.

Once I was invested, he made me feel like I was the problem. If I asked for space during arguments, he wouldn’t back off. He would get in my face, force physical affection, or get upset if we didn’t have sex after huge fights.

He has grabbed and shaken my face, thrown things at me, splashed water on me while surfing, followed me into my room when I tried to get away and cornered me, belittled me constantly; he always had feedback for me but I could never “criticize him” (e.g., telling me I was ungrateful if I told him I was scared or being hard on myself as a beginner surfer in conditions that I wasn’t prepared for with him and his buddies.)

He gave me a list of “anger dos and don’ts” from his therapist but never followed them himself, pushing until I broke down and acted out of character by screaming or punching a wall just to get him to stop.

During one of the hardest moments of my life, when I had an abortion while working full time, he made me feel selfish for wanting him to be strong for me. Instead, I ended up comforting him and he was crying the whole week when I was in so much pain.

He ended the relationship suddenly, the same day he picked me up from the airport telling me he loved me, after watching my dog for a week. He handed me a breakup letter, my bags were packed, and he blocked me everywhere with no warning. The high of the love bombing made the crash of being discarded the lowest I have ever felt.

If this sounds like the man you’re dating, surfer, born and raised in Chula Vista, still lives at home, charming, eloquent, passionate, and intense, it is likely him. His pattern is intense attachment, then flipping the blame onto you, and disappearing. He has done similar things to his last two exes. I hate that I believed him when he said they were crazy. Please be careful.
